Okay, I know that's a confusing title. Obviously, it's the latest in a long line of games in a series I have, titles "Stick Adventure". This is technically the 5th game in the series instead of the fourth (as the "3.5" would suggest), but I plan to get this one done far before Stick Adventure 4...
Anyway, notice the "OLD" in the filename. This is indeed an older version of the game. I recently restarted it so that I could make it MUCH more awesome (and it's paying off so far). The new version's battle system isn't quite done yet, though. This is a playable demo up to a certain point. You can level up as far as you want, but you'll only ever learn two spells (I think, not sure if I ever made the battle command for Thunder, but I think I did).
Genre: Turn-Based RPG
Players: One
Summary:
A sequel to my oldest game series, Stick Adventure. The other games in the series were made years ago, and as such, lack a proper storyline. I was able to tie everything together in my head, and this game strives to make sense of everything that's happened in the games so far. Of course, its staple feature seems to be the battle system. There's also a simple text system in it (which I have improved GREATLY upon, and is included in the newer version).
FEATURES:
Turn-Based battles (Not very common in Stagecast games)
Sound effects (Everything having to do with battle has a sound effect to go with it)
Text system (An older version that doesn't look as nice and actually causes some bugs, but still pretty cool. Don't use this for your own game, though. I have a much better one)
Random battles (I suppose this is to be expected, but it's a big improvement over the original Stick Final Fantasy. Do or don't play that one, it's up to you. XD)
BUGS: (Most of these are fixed in the newer version)
- If your Defense gets up too high, enemies will start doing negative damage to you. This is because the game uses a simple "Attack minus Defense" system to calculate damage.
- Text sometimes skips a block when you forward through it. This is mainly because the Space Bar is sensitive like it is... Just hit the "Go back a frame" arrow in Stagecast to see what you missed.
- When talking to the Inn Keeper, he'll talk to you twice for some reason. Just make sure you're not facing him when you press Space to go through his text.
- You can move while NPCs are speaking. Not sure if this is really a bug or if I even want to fix this in the new version. Chrono Trigger let's you move around while talking to people, after all (In fact, it may automatically fix itself).
- Save/Load system doesn't work. I had it originally, but I kept on having to add new stuff to it, and it got tedious. So, I decided I would add it once the game was finished. You don't need to use that function in the version anyway. It's not that long (You don't even fight a Boss).
- During the tutorial, the word "Squares" is misspelled. Yes, I'm aware of it, and I tried to fix it. The text system in place in this version is so unstable I couldn't do anything about it.
- Not exactly a "bug", but you might see some little text notes that I left for myself in here. I'm currently preserving this version so that I can reference it for data such as sprites, enemy stats, town designs, etc.
NEW FEATURES: (These are newer things included in the re-do of this project)
- Battle Backgrounds (Different ones for every different area)
- Awesome text system (Using ONLY the included text blocks. Looks MUCH better now than it ever will. It's perfectly ideal!)
- Various bug fixes (ALL of the above bugs are gone)
- Updated text (I have a lot more freedom with my new text system. I was able to make the tutorial very easy to understand as compared to the old one, among other things)
- Updated Battle System (Although it isn't finished yet, I plan to make a few little changes to the battle system so that things are a little less broken. For instance, I made enemy stats a bit more balanced)
That's about it. I might've updated some of the graphics, but in the end, they're still mostly just Stick people and enemies I pulled from Stick Final Fantasy One.
Let me know what you think, and I'm very open to reasonable suggestions! :3
EDIT: Upon going back to the re-do of this game (Battle system is almost complete now! Just gotta make the Level Up script!), I can say that I've updated a LOT more stuff than I originally recalled! I HAVE updated the graphics (by a pretty good bit). I've also updated maps, enemies, text, cutscenes/movement (They are close to the same thing in a way) and other minor details. Aside from that, I've greatly improved the coding of the game in general to be much more stable and much easier to fix if something goes wrong. On top of that, I've fixed a ton of bugs (nearly all of them. However, I have come across a brand new bug that will be fixed by the time I release a demo for the new version).
The demo for Version 2 will be a bit shorter, but it will look MUCH MUCH nicer, and play better as well. Hopefully, you should be able to get into the first town so that you can heal at the Inn, as well as learn at least one new spell by leveling up. Due to the awesome way I programmed the Level-Up script, you can go up to as high a level as you want, just like in version one, without worrying about any bugs (hopefully)!
I'll post it up once the demo is done. Due to the amount of text and background images, it's already pushing around 750 KB, so I hope I won't go over the 1 MB limit for uploads by the time I'm done with the demo. >.>; Look forward to it! ^_^
EDIT: I worked hard on the new version a bunch today, and I now have only a few more easy things to do before it's playable! I have an in-depth list of new features and other things written out already, and aside from missing a few maps, the new demo actually has MORE than the original! The things it's missing are:
Two maps (Sunset Valley 1 and the story scene after Luster Fields 2)
One enemy (The "Snock" which appears in Sunset Valley)
However, the new Sunset Valley is going to have a new battle background and also be updated a bit (although the updated version isn't going to be in the demo).
Other then that, all of the old maps and most of the sprites from the original are in the new demo. Feel free to check them out. I think I should be able to get this out by tomorrow or the next day (February 1st or 2nd), so get ready for a Stagecast experience like no other! ^_^ And you should be CRAZY excited if you thought this old demo was already an experience like no other! This is nothing compared to what I have now!
